Kudo Kazuhiko
1926-

Kudo Kazuhiko was born in 1926 in Tokyo as the second son of Kudo Koshu and Koen. His elder brother was Kudo Masanobu, an ikebana critic, historian and artist. Kazuhiko studied mining and metallurgy at the Kahoku Engineering High School in China and worked at the Daido Mines when the war ended. After the war, he started a coal company at the Joban Mines .
Kazuhiko’s submission to the Third Japan Ikebana Exhibition in 1952 won the Minister of Education, Science and Culture Prize. This was the beginning of his ikebana career. Kofu no Te (Miner’s Hand), his arrangement at the 1953 Art and Culture Association Exhibition, won high accolades as the encapsulation of socialist realism.
He pursued his career as an artist by participating with new generation groups that created group sculptures. Within the Ohara School, he became Houn Ohara’s right hand man, instructing at chapter kenkyukai (workshops) across Japan and helping to develop the school’s teaching curriculum.
Kazuhiko became Director of the Japan Ikebana Art Association when it was founded in 1966. In 1969, he attended the Sydney, Australia Regional Conference of Ikebana International as the Third Headmaster Houn’s assistant.
In July 1971, Kazuhiko held a solo exhibition titled Microcosmos: Ka Moku Do Kin Sui wo Tema to Shite (Micro
cosmos: the Five Elements) at the New Otani Hotel. The opening was attended by a host of dignitaries including Prime Minister Sato Eisaku, Director of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Kon Hidemi, Kawabata Yasunari, and artist Higashiyama Kaii. The exhibition was a great success and the artistry of the arrangements attained critical acclaim.
Over the years, Kazuhiko held numerous solo exhibitions (1981, 1989, 1994, 1998, 2008). In 1996, he was appointed as President of the Council of Ohara Professors, and Executive Director of the Japan Ikebana Art Association in 2000. He is currently Advisor to the Japan Ikebana Art Association, Honorary Advisor to the Council of Ohara Professors, and President of the Kenbikai Group of the Ohara School.
Kazuhiko’s publications include Maoka (pub. Hachette Fujingahosha), Nihon no Ikebana: Kudo Kazuhiko Sakuhinshu (Ikebana: Kudo Kazuhiko Collection, pub. Shogakkan), Ikebana Kazai Handbook (six volumes) (Handbook of Ikebana Materials, pub. Yasaka Shobo), Omou Mama ni Ikite – Kudo Kazuhiko Kaisoroku (Kudo Kazuhiko Reflections on Life, pub.
